Released in 1996, Windows code-named Pegasus has opened a new era for the development strategy of Microsoft and launched a ball into the beginning of one of the fiercest battles of Technology: Microsoft vs. Palm.

Windows CE 1.0, according to Pocket PC devices is available with monochrome screens.

Microsoft has created a reference system, Pegasus whose group has seen to be the ideal format for any new device. This reference system was sent to seven partners who have signed up to produce material for the new Windows operating system.

The reference platform Pegasus had dictated that all units should be:

* Pocket-sized, the size must not exceed 18x10x2.5 cm
* Power supplied by two AA batteries
* Weight less than 500g

Originally, Microsoft has enabled the display resolution 480x240 but Hewlett Packard has rejected that idea and changed the resolution 640x240 pixels.

Windows CE 1.01 is an update release June 25, 1997 with the addition of Japanese language, to extend its products into the Japanese market.

On September 29, 1997, not even 12 months after the release of Windows CE 1.0, Microsoft Corporation has officially announced the end to the support systems of first generation, and announces the release of Windows CE 2.0.
